Weekly Fiction > Thirsty Thursdays (Part 9)
Akin was bored out of his mind. He had been in the hospital for a week now. The doctors had refused to let him go home. They said they were running some tests, and they should be getting the test results today. Bimbo had been discharged yesterday, and he couldn’t wait to get back to her. The accident had been really hard on her, and the lady who had hit them…
He hadn’t really gotten round to speaking with her yet. All he knew was that she was brought in with them. He also overheard that she got it real bad; not that she didn’t deserve it. His life had been pretty perfect when she ruined it.
She was in the room next door, and he heard that she was unconscious. He decided to just take a peep, at least just to see what the woman who had almost killed him looked like. Gently, he opened the door and peered into her room. What the heck, he couldn’t see her clearly. He could just come in and stand by her bed, not that she’d notice, at least she was unconscious…
He stepped into the room, and trying his best not to make any sounds, carefully tiptoed to the bed. She had her back to him, so he couldn’t really see her face. Still tiptoeing, he moved to the other side of the bed.
She didn’t look like a killer. She didn’t look crazy either. She looked… confused? Even troubled? And she looked beautiful, just as if she was just sleeping. He almost felt sorry for her. She just lay there, not moving.
Akin was beginning to feel just a little bit too comfortable in the room. He had this overwhelming need to run his fingers through her hair. You know, just to let her know everything will be all right.
Gosh! Her hair felt soft, too soft for someone who’s been unconscious for a week. She had thick, long and silky jet black hair.
Kunbi’s eyes flicked open. It took a minute for her to recognize where she was. Her surroundings were pristine white, and the light was too bright. She immediately shut her eyes, but she had it open long enough to realize that this looked nothing like her room! She tried to move her legs, but they felt like they were made of lead. Then it hit her. She was in a hospital! How did she get there? She had no idea. Next, she tried her mouth, but her mouth was too dry to get anything audible out.
After like 2 minutes when Kunbi’s eyes had gotten used to the light (which was not that bright by the way, aka, she was just tripping lol!), Kunbi opened her eyes and was startled to see a stranger, albeit a very cute one, standing over her and running his hands through her hair.
‘Hmm” , Kunbi finally managed to mutter
Akin jumped back very startled. Damn! Wasn’t she supposed to be unconscious!?
“I’m sorry… I just came in to say hello…. had no idea….” Akin mumbled incoherently
“umn… I… its… “Kunbi whispered, not really making any sense either. Her mouth was having a lil trouble catching up with her eyes.
“I guess I have to call the nurse or doctor or both!”
Akin dashed out of the room, and in a little while returned with a doctor and nurse in tow. He lasted all of 30 seconds in the room, before he was promptly removed.
After 2 hours, Akin was given a clean bill of health, and was told he could leave. He couldn’t resist asking about the lady. Everything had happened so fast, that he hadn’t really caught her name. He decided he’d just wait a while, at least just to make sure she was ok. The nurse said he should be able to see her in an hour’s time. It seemed like forever, but then an hour passed. The door was opened, but he knocked still. Trying to go for a better second impression
“who’s that? Come in ” A very faint voice whispered from inside.
If Akin was not listening quite intently he wouldn’t have heard it.
“Hi, I just came to check up on you before leaving”
“That’s rather nice of you, but I don’t know you”
“Oh, I forgot we haven’t been formally introduced, I’m Akin, the one you took a swipe at his life”
If Kunbi was hurt, her face showed no expressison.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to.” Kunbi replied, averting her eyes. The accident was still a blur in her mind, and up till a couple of mins ago, she wasn’t even aware that there were other people involved in the accident.
“I’ll forgive you on one premise”
“and what might that be?” Kunbi asked
“On the premise that you tell me what you were thinking about, that made you distracted”
Omigosh! Up till now she had completely forgotten about the pregnancy test! She wasn’t even sure whether she was pregnant or not. She might as well come clean and tell him. After all, she didn’t know him, and she was dying to tell someone anyways.
Taking a deep breath, and Kunbi started talking. ” I was on my way from church, and I stopped by to pick a pregnancy test. I was consumed with panic at the thought that I might be pregnant”
“Why would you panic at the thought of being pregnant, that would be a good thing innit?”
“No, I don’t want to be pregnant, and even if I was, I probably lost the pregnancy in the accident”
Akin was not getting her, what woman wouldn’t want to be a mother. Anyways, he chose not to pressure her with questions.
“I’m sorry that you feel this way, I have to leave though. Would it be alright with you if I stop by tomorrow evening?” Akin asked.
“I’d appreciate that”
After exchanging a few pleasantries, Akin left the hospital. Bothered and intrigued. Shortly after he left, the Doctor walked into the room.
“Miss Peters” she began, “As part of the routine tests we ran on you when you were brought in, we ran a pregnancy test. I must tell you that you were bleeding heavily as a result of the accident, but your baby survived the accident. Ms. Peters, I’m happy to inform you that you are four weeks pregnant!

In Conversations: Onyeka Nwelue speaks with Dera Uduezue
January 19, 2013 • by Unknown
Posted on January 19, 2013 by plastiq
Dera Uduezue is one of the freshest faces onscreen nowadays. Her smiles could enliven the heart and her voice is silky and melodious. She knows what she wants when it comes to modeling. She has also joined the acting bandwagon, but has promised to set herself apart.
I met Dera long time ago, during one of my book readings and she looked elegant and continues to look that way. When you watch her, you obviously believe she is a perfect being, because of the way she smiles, reasons and does everything else. She has appeared in many music videos, including Bracket’s Yori Yori remix with 2Face Idibia.
I caught up with her not long ago and this is what I figured out for you.
I am very age conscious. How old are you?
I am 23 years of age
What have you been doing with your life?
Modelling mainly and now acting. I graduated from Nnamdi Azikiwe University in 2010, passed out from NYSC June, 2012. Show biz has been it for me
You are a model and actress? Can you tell us about the journey of getting roles and doing photo shoots?  How difficult is it? How did you get people to start believing in you? What is the voodoo?
I would say I have been blessed to have a good agency, they bring in all the jobs, so I never go through clients or experience what many young girls complain about, harassments and the likes of it. The journey has brought its mix of emotions- joy, disappointment, anger, fun, fun and more fun. (Laughs) I love what I do, and people see my passion through the jobs I have done. Their belief in my competence helps me forget the tough side of the industry- how many times I have been turned down at auditions, or the delay in getting the pay. All in all, I cling on to the bigger picture which is what I am working towards
At the moment, you live in Lagos. What are you doing there?
Yes, I live in Surulere. Having recently completed my NYSC, I stick to my modeling and also my new found love- acting, while I work towards starting my own business.
Many young people in Nigeria know nothing about what they want in life. I mean, how do you think they can discover themselves? And what advice do you have for young people?
Well, as cliche as it may sound, I advice young people to do what works for them, for who they are. For instance, modeling because people say you’re pretty, it’s beyond that because if the passion is not there, you can only go a foot in the industry. Give yourself sometime, search your insides to know what God has planted in there
For some time now, I thought that university education elevates man to the highest order. I mean, I still find it appalling that many graduates haven’t even invented themselves and have nothing to do. What is your take on this?
Yes, the average Nigerian graduate believes that, to make money you have to be an employee, which is not wrong, owing to the fact that not everyone can be a good entrepreneur. When it becomes a problem is when no job is forth coming and you sit around waiting for a miracle, where there are tons of innovative ideas you can develop, work on and become successful at.
Are you an emotional person?
Only when I am upset and try to speak, I tear up. (Laughs)
Nigerian models are doing well for themselves. Infact, they are getting the sort of recognition that they truly deserve. But, the market is getting saturated. How do you think one can make him himself totally unique and different?
Like I said, it’s a tough industry. To be unique, you need to have your signature. If you’re a runway model, have a walk, expression that sets you apart. Not forgetting integrity and self respect, a lot of young models lack that these days.
I may need to get personal with you. Are you in a relationship? If not, why? If yes, is it distracting?
(Laughs) That’s pretty personal, but no, I am not in a relationship…Let’s just say, I am waiting to feel that click.
What is your take on the political system of Nigeria?
I feel politics in Nigeria shouldn’t be referred to as democratic, because no matter what the masses do or say, the ogas up there get the final say.
Do you see yourself as a youth activist? Just like others?
Na, I don’t see myself as a youth activist. We the youths take on whatever life throws at us. We will be alright
How do you unwind?
I love to sing, so the karaoke bar does it for me, then a nice time with my friends, movies and the beach.
