Lost Wax Playing Cards: a continuing history of the Benin Kingdom
Lost Wax comprises of 54 playing cards, which are adorned with illustrations of kings, queens and courtiers from 15th century Benin City, Nigeria.
Each set of Lost Wax Playing Cards contains 54 playing cards featuring illustrations of royal figures from the 15th – 19th century Benin Empire. The Benin Empire thrived in what is now southern Nigeria and left an impressive record of their civilization in the form of bronze plaques commissioned by the King (Oba) to adorn the courtyards of his palace. The playing cards pay homage to this prosperous period in Nigerian history and, in effect, bring this bygone era from the archives into modernity in a colorful and playful way.
I had the idea for these playing cards in art school at the School of Art Institute of Chicago. There, I learned all about contemporary artists like Kehinde Wiley and Yinka Shonibare. Quickly, however, I realized that contemporary art isn’t housed only in art galleries and museums—art is everywhere.
In the world of consumer goods as well as galleries, the form that follows the function of packaging, typography, illustration, graphic design and advertising is more than worthy of being called art. This is what Warhol hinted at when he framed soup cans and soapboxes. – Olutade Abidoye (creator)

Half of a Yellow Sun wins the Golden Dhow award

Half of a Yellow Sun won the Golden Dhow (Best Feature film) at Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) 2014, the highest prize awarded at the Festival of the Dhow Countries, ZIFF’s annual celebration of “the arts and cultures of the African Continent, India, Pakistan, the Gulf States, Iran and the Indian Ocean islands.”

ZIFF 2014 : THE WINNERS
The Zanzibar International Film Festival awarded its prestigious prizes in a glittering closing ceremony on Saturday night June 21st. In his speech as Festival Director and CEO of Ziff, Professor Martin Mhando had this to say:
ZIFF’s film culture has always focused on African and Dhow culture. ZIFF embraces its advocacy role and wants to continue to play its unique role to Zanzibar and African society and its needs. That is why ZIFF is such an unwieldy beast. But we love that beast for it allows and enables debate about points of views and it indeed provokes consequences.
During the ceremony the invited guests, including over 30 film directors and filmmakers from over a dozen countries were entertained by artists including King Maloo.  Every year ZIFF awards a number of films in various categories.
SIGNIS AWARDS
The SIGNIS award is presented by the World Catholic Association for Communication, that has jury members in almost all the major festivals worldwide. It has been presented at ZIFF for the last 10 years. SIGNIS awards an award for Best Feature or Documentary African Film, and also presents The East African Talent Award to a talented and promising new director. The prize awarded is $1000.00.

The ZIFF jury awards Golden Dhows for films in the following categories: – Best Feature Film, Best East African Film, Best Documentary, Best Short / Animation.  The ZIFF Jury will also award the Silver Dhow to a film considered a runner up to Best Feature Film. The Chairman’s Award, this year known as the Bi Kidude Award, will go to the filmmaker who has shown an acute portrayal of a contemporary issue in a balanced manner. Additional awards include The Lifetime Achievement Award. ZIFF 2014 congratulates all the award winners as well as commending all the filmmakers who participated in this year’s festival.
